Personal and Cultural Differences

I have a very dear friend. His name is Ryo Aliandu. He comes from Jakarta while I come from Flores. He is 24 years old, I am 41. As he went to Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY): National University of Yogyakarta one year ahead of me, now he is at semester 6. I am taking English Teacher Training Program in Sanata Dharma University, but he is taking Extraordinary Education for Special Needs. He is around 40s kg, while I am 69 kg. He is smoking and can finish two packs per day; I don`t smoke, because I cannot stand with its ill smell. Both of us have differences in many ways.
To have such differences is very good. The differences remind me of how important Ryo is for me and vice versa, also how we play our roles in making our lives sound. So, the difference is not necessarily a burden, but it enriches our lives. This happens to the difference in race and culture fields. We cannot imagine what kind of life would treat us if we had just one race or one culture. I think our life would be just boring and stagnant. We ought to be thankful that we have such numerous races and cultures. Racial difference compels us to delve, discover, elaborate, and to appreciate. Cultural difference unites us in one pot of life. It also triggers us to move out of our own culture to go to the others to see and enrich our knowledge and insight.
Difference never stunts our life, but rather develops our life to the full. I have learned a lot from Ryo. Since he comes from Jakarta, I get to know important places. I learn to appreciate his ideas even though he is far younger than me. I also get to know many things concerning to his major study. He already brought me to two Extraordinary Schools in Purworedjo and Wonosobo. Seeing at his weight, I learn how to keep my well-built body. As he is smoking, I learn to keep breath healthy. As I have been to many places with different in race and culture since 1982, I`ve learned how to immerge myself into them. When I go to Bali or Jakarta, I had to live economically. When I went to Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, I learned had to speak in English and tried to pick up some of their local dialects. By so doing, I really enrich my life.

Poem: "The world is too much with us"

“World” in the writer`s (William Wordsworth), point of view is nature. For me, world is nature and lifestyle. This is world (nature) is a really precious thing should be treasured and developed in a wise way especially for the next generations. Why? It is because this world only belongs to the coming offspring. The present generation, including myself, is responsible for keeping it as genuine as before in the sense of no pollution (air, water, sound, etc.). Yet, my world (lifestyle) is already too much. what I have done so far is supporting the pollution. I tend to have an easy life by riding motorbike using gasoline and refuse to use public transport. In the past I used to cut wood for my firewood, littering papers at school premises and road side. The very hard thing I think I cannot leave now is commuting with my motorbike until I finish my study in this university. It is because my life demands. Hoping, one day my world, both nature and lifestyle will go together supporting each other for the sake of the next generation that deserves this most world.

Self Introduction

Hi Friends,
My full name is Antonius Waget, you can call me Anton. Right now I am a semester four student at English Teacher Training Program of Sanata Dharma Univ. Yogyakarta.

My life has been treating me in a wonderful way. Since joining this Univ I do find an excellent new life with new spirit of learning things that I didn`t do when I took philosophy program, 20 years ago, in my college: Ledalero, Flores.

Moreover, what I am learning here is fulfilling and answering all the questions while teaching English at my school in Seminary of St. John Berchmans, Mataloko, Flores. One more thing to say is that having an extra time with ICEE program and the crews (native speakers) is an invaluable grace from the Above. To have them is my dream that has come true. I do appreciate it.

World round traveling

Tuesday, 12 April 2011

I have been to some countries in Africa (1999-2004), like Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Things that I took with me were: Passport, foreign currency, money pouch, bag pack, first-aid kit,and band-aid.

When I went to Kenya, Eastern Africa, I took with me some hundred USD to pay entry visa to the country. I got the visa in the Airport. Yet, a year later, when I went to work in Botswana, Southern Africa, I got the visa while I was still in Kenya. When I was about to go to Botswana, I got some USD from a Philipino friend. A month later, before starting Setswana (the national language) class, with a friend, I went to Zambia for a two-week-visit. I brought with me some US Dollar and Pula (Botswana currency), passport, back pack, and first-aid kit. After working for two years, with two of my friends, I went to Zimbabwe. I took along with me my passport, back pack, and some thousand Pula. I exchanged my Pula into the Zimbabwean Dollar when entering the gate. From Zimbabwe I went to Zambia again to visit a friend working for more than 10 years. I exchanged my Pula at legal exchange center. I spent all the Kwacha during my stay there. I put all the currency in my money pouch I that I bought in Jakarta.

My valid passport helped me easily enter those countries. The strong back pack I had was so useful. It helped me save my clothes. It is a portable; it is easily carried on my back. Luckily that during all the traveling I did not get any accident, so I did not use any band-aid nor medicine from the first-aid kit.

=======================================
Things I learn from my experience from making trip abroad are that first of all my physic must be in well sound. Next, I have to have enough money to get all the legal needed papers done on time, to pay return ticket, accommodation and food, and medication needed. Besides that, I expose myself to different people, language, culture, lifestyle, food, sightseeing, etc. Because of that I keep my fingers crossed to have another chance to go to other parts of this world, like Europe, America, Australia, and countries in Asia.

Important Role of Religions

In this short writing I would like to talk about the important role that has been played by religions towards human being as the adherents.

The latest news posted by Adherents.com says that the biggest number of religion in the world is Christianity with 2.1 billion adherents, then followed by Islam: 1.5 billion, Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist: 1.1 billion, Hinduism: 900 million, and Chinese traditional religion: 394 million. And the rest of the world population (around 873 million people) belong to more or less 20 other religions.

The first two major religions, Christianity and Islam are originally derived from Judaism. Thousands years BC Judaism was a strong and prominent religion, ethnic and culture as well in Middle East. Judaism was impeded by the Romans Empire and later on by Nazi. From Jerusalem, in the first years, Christianity slowly spread to Africa, Europe, and other parts of Asia. It encountered lots of hardships coming from Judaism and traditional religions. Yet, it later on rapidly spread throughout the Roman Empire areas under the Great Constantine who ruled for 30 years, 301 days (from 25 July 306 AD – 22 May 337). The development of literacy – hundreds years later – which was, firstly, dominated by the royal people and Christian religious people significantly support the spread of Christianity in Europe and the colonial areas, like America, Asia, Africa, and Australia. So, from the very beginning, the spread of the religion brought along literacy skill that triggered and supported science and technology development which shape cultures and the entire civilization.
Islam as the second major religion also, since the very beginning of its spread, plays a key role in shaping culture and civilization of human being started from Arab. This is proofed by the very first sentence in Al-Quran: “iqra”, means read, learn, and understand. Prophet Mohammad himself supported the people education and civilization trough reading. Later on some talented Moslems diligently developed their literacy skills. Arabs were then known as masters of the spoken word – poetry, storytelling, and memorizing genealogies.

Under the spirit of Reconstructionist, Judaism has played a significant key of supporting the civilization in our modern world thorough education, especially started in late 1920s to 1940s in the USA. It is obviously that the right now modern America is also determined by Judaism in the USA in a good collaboration with Christianity, Moslem, and other religions.

All other religions, even though they are minority, have played a great role in shaping cultures and civilization of human being throughout the world. For example Shinto’s in Japan, and Confucius in China.

In short, all the religions in the world have played very significant role in civilizing and shaping human being culture.

=======================================

One new insight I have got from this week class is that all cultures and religions are good, because each of them has common ground as moral and humanistic teachings for everybody in this world. There is no single thing is bad in all the cultures and religions. The only bad thing is every person`s mind used to value or appreciate each culture and religion. Facts show that some of the adherents (especially religion) use his/her religion wrongly then mislead others to the wrong way for economic or political reasons. This makes religion frightening.

Positive - Negative thinking

Everybody tends to only positively think of him/herself, and negatively of other(s). On one hand it is normal, because no one wants to hurt him/herself; everybody wants a secure life. Yet, he/she sometimes negatively thinks of other(s) because many reasons. For example, he/she wants other(s) is just like him/herself. He/she does not want other(s) appear(s) different from him/herself. Another reason is he/she wants to dominate other(s). On the other hand this kind of thinking is totally wrong, because no one is perfect; everybody has his/her strengths and weaknesses.

Living in a society needs everybody`s better understanding of oneself and other(s). Since every one of us has his/her own strengths and weaknesses, we need one another. A weak one obviously needs the strong one. Yet, the strong one certainly needs the weak one in any way. In this sense the strong one may not look down upon the weak one.
